Destinations in Europe

There are over 50 countries in Europe today, 26 of which are what’s called Schenghen countriesAustria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. You will need a Schenghen Visa to travel to these Countries.

 

All of these countries are located in Europe, from which:

  • Four of them – members of the EFTA, implement Schengen acquis through specific agreements related to the Schenghen agreement.
  • Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Lichtenstein are associate members of the Schenghen Area but are not members of the EU.
  • Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City have opened their borders with, but are not members of the visa-free zone.
  • There are five more EU members, that have not joined Schengen zone: Ireland – that still maintains opt-outs and Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Cyprus – that are seeking to join soon.

The external borders of the Schengen Zone reach a distance of 50,000 km long, where 80% of it is comprised of water and 20% of land.

The area counts hundreds of airports and maritime ports, many land crossing points, an area of 4,312,099 km2, and a population of 419,392,429 citizens.


Note: Although most of the Schengen countries are in the European Union, you should not confuse the Schengen Area with the EU.

Non- Schengen Countries

The European countries that are not part of the Schengen zone are: Albania, Andora, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Georgia, Ireland, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, The United Kingdom and Vatican City

There are different types of visa categories one can apply. The type of visa category you wish to apply depends on the purpose of travel and you must get proper documents to support you application

REQUIREMENTS

General requirements for obtaining a visa:

  • Application for Schengen/ non-schengen Visa – Application form (completed and signed)(*)
  • Original passport (*) valid for travel to the Members States to visit. The passport validity must exceed the planned stay in the Schengen Area with at least three months. The passport must have been issued within the last ten years.
  • Complete photocopies of original passport, except blank pages.
  • If the applicant is not a resident of Kenya, a justification for lodging the application here must be provided.
  • Previous passport in original if a new passport has been issued within the last three years.
  • Photocopy of the national ID card (both sides).
  • One color photos not more than six months old, passport size (45 mm x 35 mm), full face and taken against a white background. Click here for specifications.
  • If you are self-employed, you need to provide a Business Registration Certificate.
  • If you are employed, please provide the employer’s letter with details like position in the Company; leave duration, etc.
  • Individual medical travel insurance which covers all costs that could arise as a result of emergency medical assistance, emergency hospitalization, medical repatriation or repatriation in case of death. The insurance should cover costs of at least EUR 30,000 and be valid for the duration of the stay in all the Schengen countries.
  • Preliminary ticket booking or travel itinerary (it is not necessary to buy a flight ticket at this stage).
  • Payment or proof of payment of the visa fee

Each member country of the Schengen zone can issue Schengen visas.

HOW TO APPLY

Step 1:

Before applying, please ensure you are very clear on your ‘purpose of visit’ – we are here to assist and help you through the entire visa application process but are not permitted to advise or guide you on choosing a visa category. We have no say on whether you will be granted a visa or how much time it will take to process, as this is entirely the prerogative of the Embassy to decide on.
For all visas appointments to visit the Visa Application Centre or consular office will be facilitated by our agents.
The appointment wait time may go up to 15 working days and that the Italian Embassy’s working time is – 10 calendar days. Hence, please plan your travel accordingly and apply for your visa up to three months ahead of your trip.

Step 2:

Please review the Requisite Documents required at the time of submission, all Mandatory, Supporting documents for visa application
Insurance has to cover the day of departure and the day of arrival +7 days after date of arrival in Kenya (this in case the person misses the flight and there are complications in re-routing through to Kenya).

FOLLOW UP

After submit your application, you will like to get prepared for any eventuality. Different embassies take different durations. The US embassy will give you the feedback immediately, Canadian embassy take up 21days. Either way you must be prepared for any eventuality.


In the event that your visa has been denied, do not loose hope, Also known as a visa refusal, this is a status in which the visa issuing authority denies you the permit to visit the country. When this happens, you will receive a letter stating the outcome, and depending on the country, and the reason for the visa rejection, there may be a visa refusal stamp on the passport
